the year of bluboho

As we celebrate our one-year anniversary, we look back at the top lessons we have learned throughout our first year as bluboho. Cheryl and I had always admired each other's jewelry. Bracelets, necklaces, all of it - we were always noticing pieces on one another, which would always lead to a story about where, when, and how we received the piece. One sunny afternoon at a lululemon work lunch, an idea was hatched. Our own story in the making. Cheryl had just returned from Greece and was smitten by all of the little jewelry shops dotted along the coast. She turned to me and said, "I have always wanted to own my own little jewelry boutique". Immediately, and without thinking I said "me too!". Cheryl then proclaimed that we should do it! Open our own jewelry boutique. I agreed, of course. It seemed like a fun thing to do, and a thing that would likely never happen, but why not dream? Somewhere along the way, the idea began to grow. A business plan was formed. And our dreams became a reality. There were times (many) when I thought this whole idea of bluboho would never become a reality, but in those moments I had Cheryl's beaming smile, raring to go.

In October 2010 we began having trunk shows at beautiful, intimate venues (like Power Yoga Canada). It was like our final test - will this work - will people actually come and buy these beautiful pieces? The answer was an overwhelming YES! From there, we knew there was only one space for us - it was 800 sq. ft., with a beautiful storefront in downtown Oakville. We had to have it! There was only small roadblock - the successful business that had inhabited that space for the past 17 years. To our extreme surprise in November 2010, the space became available. There was no looking back - with a sign like this, we had to do it. With lumps in our throats, a few tears, and our entire savings, we signed the lease. And thus began our dreams becoming reality.

Looking back, it took immense courage for both of us to make bluboho a reality. We gave up our jobs, not just good jobs, great jobs - working for an amazing company. We shelled out much of both of our savings, and we took a risk. Let me tell you, it was the best feeling in the world. Lesson number one: Life is short! Don't spend a second doing things that aren't propelling you and your dreams forward. Put yourself out there, take the plunge, be brave and be courageous! Proclaim your goals to anyone and everyone that will listen - the more people know, the more you are held accountable to making them happen and the more support you have.
On March 1, 2011 the doors to bluboho officially opened. An amazing thing happened - we became the space for people to mark every kind of life experience. From birth, to death, weddings, birthdays, graduations, bad days, good days.... you name it, we've celebrated it. It made me realize how special the moments are, and how important it is to really acknowledge them, mark them, and celebrate them. Lesson number two: celebrate the moments. They make life worth living. One of the most amazing things about bluboho is that people tell us their story, why they were there and what they needed. It was just what we had dreamed of, but somehow it was far beyond anything we had imagined. We are touched and inspired by our guests daily, by their stories and why they have come to visit us. Stories are the best part of our relationships. Lesson number three: Create your story and tell it! As we head into year two, we cannot wait to see what the future holds. What people we will meet, stories we will hear and lessons we will learn. It is with extreme, and humble gratitude to each and every one of the people who have supported us that we begin the next phase of our next journey. Thank you for sharing your stories, for marking the moments, and for choosing bluboho!
Much love,
Maggie & Cheryl
