lessons from the lotus

“If you feel lost, disappointed, hesitant, or weak, return to yourself, to who you are, here and now.  And when you get there, you will discover yourself, like a lotus flower in full bloom, even in a muddy pond, beautiful and strong.”  - Masaru Emoto

The lotus flower is really one of the most interesting and mystical flowers in the way that it grows and blossoms. The lotus grows in muddy water, and must push through the mud and the water’s surface in order to bloom beautifully. If it weren’t for the mud, the lotus flower would not blossom. The same thing can be said about each of us. Just like the lotus flower, we need our mud to grow into the person we are meant to be. The lotus teaches us the importance of honoring our mud. Trying to force through the hard times with our heads down often makes it feel that much harder. In reality, getting through the difficult times in life helps to make room for change, opportunity, and growth that would not otherwise be possible.

About a year and a half ago, I went through some of my own mud. After graduating from university and so many years of knowing what would come next, I was now entering the real world and nothing was for certain. My whole life was in front of me, to be determined. Instead of excitement, I initially felt fear and anxiety about all the uncertainty. While I was going through this time in my life, a wise woman (my wonderful Mom) would tell me that “breakdowns help lead to breakthroughs”. And she was right. Going through that time, trying different jobs and new things, has helped me learn things about myself that I would have never known if I hadn’t gone through that scary and uncertain time. Learning to embrace my mud has helped me to grow in so many ways, to learn to trust my own decisions, and to stay true to myself. I have actually come to feel freedom in knowing that I’m in control of my own life. I still don’t have it all figured out, and have realized that I might never have it all figured out, but that’s ok. The journey that gets me to where I need to be is the important part - all parts of it, including the mud. My Mom’s advice has stuck with me and it really helps to put things into perspective during the more challenging times. Even though life can be hard, challenging, and even painful sometimes, changing our perspective on those times can make all the difference. Rather than focusing on how hard it is and thinking ahead to the “brighter and better” future, instead look at these challenges as necessary in leading you to growth, change, and happiness that you would not otherwise experience. As the first month of the new year comes to an end, it’s only natural to start thinking towards the future, to the change, possibility, and new beginnings of the year ahead. But, whatever ups and downs, challenges and breakthroughs that you may come across this year, remember the lesson from the lotus - finding strength in challenges helps us to grow. Wear your lotus as a reminder that if you embrace your mud, then new beginnings are always possible.   xo Kimmi
